Vajrapala Moerman started the topic Courage ~ Podcast GS8: 27.December 2020 (Transcription) in the forum Dharmavidya's Teachings 1 day, 19 hours ago
Faith is the foundation of courage. The word courage comes from the word for heart (cuore in Italian, cœur in French). What saves people is not intellectual ideas, not religious institutions, certainly not the attainment of rank and status in a religious organization. What saves people is a basic attitude lodged deep in the heart; and one of the…[Read more]
Vajrapala Moerman started the topic Conceit of Self ~ Podcast GS7: 24.December 2020 (Transcription) in the forum Dharmavidya's Teachings 1 day, 19 hours ago
Often, we talk about Buddhist training. My teacher Kennett Roshi used this term a lot. She would sometimes say that the term training was not quite right, but that she couldn’t think of a better term. Why did she say that?
When we think of training in a worldly sense, we’re generally thinking of training somebody, or training oneself, to be som…[Read more]
Vajrapala Moerman started the topic Contrition ~ Podcast GS6: 20.December 2020 (Transcription) in the forum Dharmavidya's Teachings 1 day, 19 hours ago
Why do we take refuge in the Buddha? We take refuge because we know that the self is not a secure refuge for itself. How do we know this? Well, we know it by self-examination. This is one of the aspects of contemplation, meditation: one looks into oneself, one looks into one’s own mind. What does one find there? Many things: perhaps criticism,…[Read more]
Vajrapala Moerman started the topic Buddhist Psychology ~ Podcast GS10, 08th January 2021 (Transcription) in the forum Dharmavidya's Teachings 1 day, 19 hours ago
Sometimes we talk about Buddhist psychology. Here I’d like to say a little bit how I understand this term. What is Buddhist psychology? Often you encounter things in the West which purport to be Buddhist psychology, but when you look at them closely, what you often find is that they are not really Buddhist. They are the use of Buddhist t…[Read more]

From Amitayus, of tender care,
Breaks a warm and happy smile
And a trillion rays of light
Fill the billion Buddha lands.
Then Quan Shi Yin, so great and kind,
Prostrates before that Buddha, saying thus:
“Why do you make this lovely smile:
What is the reason, what the cause?”
The Buddha’s voice,
Like Brahma thunder rolling forth declare…[Read more]

What is the point of Global Sangha? The job of Global Sangha is to wage peace in the world. To demonstrate peace. To demonstrate harmony. To demonstrate an alternative to the greed, hate and delusion that is leading humankind toward disaster.
The world has changed and it goes on changing and not…[Read more]

De wereld is veranderd en blijft veranderen en niet altijd op een…[Read more]
Vajrapala Moerman started the topic Nyorai ~ Amida Shu Podcast 105: 1st November 2020 (Transcription) in the forum Dharmavidya's Teachings 2 months ago
The word Nyorai 如来 is the Japanese rendering of the original Indian term Tathāgata. It is the term in Japanese of highest respect for the Buddha, for any Buddha, for Amida, for Lokeśvararāja Buddha.
In the Larger Pureland Sutra Shakyamuni, talking to Ananda, says: “Lokeśvararāja, the Tathāgata. Arahat Samyaksaṃbuddha, full of boundless compas…[Read more]
Formal practice moments are very helpful to keep the good things – the light – in mind.
They are ‘Nien Fo’ = keeping the Buddha in mind : ‘Nien’ = mindfulness and ‘Fo’ = Buddha.
So when I do those little formal practices, this helps me to keep the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha in Mind.
In those moments I contemplate the Buddha in gratitude…[Read more]
Vajrapala Moerman started the topic Vow 44 – Joy and Enthusiasm ~ Amida Shu Podcast 104: 30th October 2020 in the forum Dharmavidya's Teachings 2 months, 2 weeks ago
In recent podcasts I’ve talked about the vows made by Dharmakara bodhisattva, and also about chanting, song and the spirit of rapture in Buddhism. These two themes come together in the 44th Vow made by Dharmakara, where he says:
Oh Blessed One, may I not come to the complete awakening if, when I have done so, bodhisattvas of Buddha lands t…[Read more]
Vajrapala Moerman started the topic Refuge for the mind ~ Amida Shu Podcast 103: 28th October 2020 in the forum Dharmavidya's Teachings 2 months, 2 weeks ago
The Dhammapada begins with two famous verses on mindfulness (and I say here mindfulness in the original sense of having your mind full of good things). The verses go:
♫ Manopubbaṅgamā dhammā, manoseṭṭhā manomayā, ♫
♫ manasā ce paduṭṭhena bhāsati vā karoti vā, ♫
♫ tato naṁ dukkham-anveti cakkaṁ va vahato padaṁ. ♫

Vajrapala Moerman started the topic Rapture and Song ~ Amida Shu Podcast 102: 26th October 2020 (Transcription) in the forum Dharmavidya's Teachings 2 months, 2 weeks ago
Buddhism in the modern world has stimulated a huge amount of academic scholarship and there are innumerable books. So many things one can study! And then, on the other hand, there is the idea of Buddhism as a way of life, and I have to say often a rather strict way of life with much emphasis on moral and ethical questions. Avoid anything…[Read more]
The Buddha learned us how fragile and dependent we are. Most of the things we depend of are a one-way dependency. The sun provides the light and the warmth to let all beings on earth live and flourish. We can make fire and warm ourselves with it, make food hot and eat it, make a cosy fire to sit buy. The sun is not ours, the fire is…[Read more]
