I wonder if someone can help me. I know Amida Buddha is the Buddha of Infinite Light. I know Siddharta Gatauma was the first Buddha and that these Buddhas have different names before enlightenment and in different languages their names are obviously different.
The internet tells me there are 29 Buddhas. How can this be ? Are they all students or followers of Siddarta Gatauma. Have I got this all wrong.

    • According to some traditionsort the 29 Buddhas were before Siddharta. He talked about the dharma as a lost city that he rediscovered.
In Mahayana Buddhism (Tibeten, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese forms) there is the idea of many many Buddhas, each having different vows or emphasising different aspects of enlightenment. Amida is one of these Buddhas. Do they exist historically? Maybe they were based upon real people at some point but they are spiritual beings as much as – or more than – earthly ones. Some people think of them as archetypes, some like angels. Hope this makes sense 🙂
